Q.1

A. 1

NOTES FOR SUPPLEMENTARIES

What is the role of the RAF helicopters in Hong Kong?

The support of the Garrison in Hong Kong whose role

is to assist if necessary in maintaining internal

security in the Colony and its external defence.

Q.2

A.2

Questions about the number of aircraft in the squadron/ suitability of the Western Mk 10 helicopters/general adequacy of the squadron establishment

The aircraft establishment of the squadron is based on

a requirement to provide a clearly defined simultaneous

lift which it is not my intention to disclose.

But the squadron's ability to fulfil the agreed task

inevitably varies depending on the distances to be

covered, the nature of the loads, the operating altitudes

and the ambient temperature. Indeed we are now reviewing,

in the light of a complete year's operational experience

in Hong Kong, the unit establishment of the squadron.

As regards suitability for the task and serviceability

generally, however, we are satisfied that the Whirlwind

Mk 10, which is a well proven aircraft, is perfectly

suitable for the task and that its serviceability is

up to expectations.

Q.3

A.3

Questions about reinforcement of Hong Kong by helicopters both before and after our withdrawal from South East Asia.

Until our withdrawal from South East Asia is nearing

completion in 1971 we will be able to reinforce Hong Kong

as necessary from the Far East Air Force in Singapore.
