Later this year the new Morrison Kill
Technical destitute will start up its first classes in
promises. The manpower survey reports proceed
To far by the Latustrial Training Advisory Committeo make it clear that there is a growing requirement for skillet creatives al craftsmen la industry, and it is not too 2000 feel for us to consider taking a decision ja principle to proceed with one or more further Technical Institutes. I hope we can do this before too long.
Finally, at the higher levels, we are
reaching broad preliminary agreement on how to re-inforce and extend facilities of the kind provided by the Technical College. A Folytechnic-type institution has of course been talked about, but opinions differ on what this means. Fersonally, I am now convinced that there is not really room to insert another type of institution at a
+
level between the Technical College and the Universities, and that to do so would be detrimental to the Technical College. But we do need to relieve the Techuical College of some of its lower-level courses, which might be trans- ferred to the Technical Institutes, to provided for courses loading to still higher qualifications in some appropriate technologies at the top of the scale; and to provide room for additional students in one way or another perhaps in two separate but inter-linked institutions. Whether we then call the combination a Polytechnic or not seems to me largely a question of terminology, or perhaps presentation, without too much practical importance. I sincerely hope to be able to put the fundamental policy questions involvo“ forward for scusipration chortly.
