Daily activities of a secondary student

in a communist controlled Middle School

(Heung To Middle School)

The student arrived at the school at about 8 a.m. on a

Monday morning and started to unpack his books until the bell rang at 8.15. The class spent the first fifteen minutes reading the day's communist newspapers.

2. The first scheduled lesson, from 8.30 to 9.50, was "Mathematics" during which revision of the term's work was conducted by the teacher. The two periods which followed were devoted to "Chinese Literature" and concentrated on revision of various works of MAO. The teacher explained where necessary, different phrases appearing in these works. Normal "Physics" lesson came next and at 12.15 there was a break for lunch.

3. The afternoon session began at 2 p.m. with an "English lesson" during which, the teacher revised the subject of "Translation" with the class. He did some translations between the English and Chinese languages on the blackboard which consisted of common terus in day to day use and some simple MAO quotations. The last lesson of the day was "Music" and students were required to form into groups of two or three and to sing revolutionary songs for which they were given marks to be entered in their final examination reports.

The school finished at 3.30 p.m. when the student left school for home to study for the final examinations commencing the following week.
