APPENDIX A.
Performance of Candidates from Communist-Controlled Schools
in the Hong Kong Chinese School Certificate Examination, 1964-67, and
the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (Chinese), 1968-69
Up to and including 1967, the main public examination in Hong Kong
sat by 5th year students of schools where Chinese was the language of
instruction was the Hong Kong Chinese School Certificate. To be
successful in this examination, a candidate had to obtain passes in 5
subjects, of which one had to be Chinese language, one a 'Science' subject,
and one an 'Arts' subject. The pass rate for Communist-controlled schools
in this examination for the years 1964-67 in comparison with that of all
schools in the Colony participating is given at Annex 1.
From 1968 onwards, this examination was renamed the Hong Kong
Certificate of Education (Chinese). The certificate given to a candidate
after the examination simply lists the subject taken by him and the grades
he achieved, these grades running in descending order from A to H. Grade
E under this system is regarded as the equivalent of the pass standard
of the former Hong Kong Chinese School Certificate Examination.
The results for communist-controlled schools in this examination
for the years 1968 and 1969 in comparison with those of all schools in
the Colony participating are given at Annex 2 and 3 respectively.
The standards of achievement by the communist-controlled schools
in both these examinations are markedly lower than those in other
participating schools in the Colony.
