Communist Attacks
Communist papers were attacking the Government on several fronts.
First and foremost of these issues was the imprisonment of 23 striking water workers who were elected office-bearers of a union.
Wen Wei and Ta Kung said in identical stories that the Hong Kong Government Waterworks Chinese Employees Union had issued a statement at a meeting yesterday to protest against the new provocation.
Waterworks workers who attended the meeting were determined to unite together and give a counter-blow at the new political persecution, the papers added.
Editorially, Ta Kung described the court action as a "pre-meditated political porsecution" and Wen Wei called it a "naked Fascist persecution."
Yesterday's New Evening Post also published a short comment to denounce the Hong Kong British authorities on this matter.
Another target of Communist attack was the trial of Ng Kam-chuen,
an employee of Wen Wei, on two charges.
Although Ng was released by the judge, Communist papers maintained that this was another political persecution and that the Hong Kong British authorities were compelled to set him free.
Wen Wei demanded that the culprits in beating up Ng should be severely punished and that Eg's losses should be compensated. A short comment on this matter was also published by the paper,
The third target of attack was the court hearing on the fighting case involving the proprietor and two onployoos of the Ka Nin Barber Shop.
Communist papers alleged that the Hong Kong British authorities were conniving at the atrocities of American-Chiang elements by setting free the culprit (the proprietor) and sending to prison the two workers who were beaten up.
Only carried in Wen Wei was a report that a Hong Kong British official driving a private car bearing the number plate AK 391X was responsible for a hit-and-run accident at 0045 hours on July 21 at the junction of Java Road and King's Road.
