India is concerned, at the Government aro
prepared to consider with the Indian Government
what action might be taken to alleviate their
position as the result of a tariff.
The earliest date proposed by the Textile
Council for the changeover to the tariff is
1st January 1972. The Government intend to
enter into discussion with Commonwealth Govern-
ments which have rights to duty-free entry in the
mar future with a view to securing their
of
Riccafiament to the introduction of a tariff on this
basis. The objective is to give the industry a
reasonable time to prepare for the change.
10. I turn now to the question of financial
assistance to the industry to encourage re-
equipment. Here the Government have concluded
that in present circumstances, including in
particular the position on public expenditure,
it would not be possible tó justify giving thb
industry financial assistance in excess of that
