Department

With my Saving Despatch No. 673 dated

the 29 November, I sent you copies of the

Customs (Import Deposits) Bill; this has

now been enacted and I enclose copies of

the Act itself.

2. In spite of full debate in the House,

few amendments have been made to the Bill

and most of these to Schedule 2, "RELIEFS",

in which there have been changes to Paragraphs

3,4 and 5 relating to the remitting and

reduction of import deposits payable on

imported goods for re-export and re-imported.

The new provisions are of wide application

and will leave room for Customs officials to

give more reliee than would have been

possible under Schedule 2 as originally drafted

with the Bill.

3. When the mechanics of the scheme have been

in operation for some time, it should be

possible to see how these measures are

affecting your trade, and I should be

interested to hear from you when you are in

a position to assess this.
