Dear in Portiñan

Thank you for your letter of

10th March, 1969.

I have noted your concern about the possible loss of valuable business in supplying buses to public transport operators in Hong Kong should either of the franchise companies seek permission, under the terms of the enabling Ordinance which covers their operations, to purchase other than British or British Common- wealth vehicles. As you will appreciate, should either of the companies seek such permission I and my advisers will have to consider the matter in the light of the best interests of the people of Hong Kong, and circumstances could be such that these would be better served at the time by a purchase of vehicles of other than British or British Commonwealth origin.

I may add that, so far as I am aware, British Leyland Motor Corporation's control of most of the major bus builders in Britain has not been adduced as a reason for seeking exemption from the terms of the Ordinance.
