}
Until the beginning of the 1950's the chief
aim of the Swedish textile industry was to supply the
home market with goods suited to the taste and pocket
of the local population. Imports of raw materialis
were just sufficient to sustain this industry, and
exports of manufactured textile goods were generally.
speaking negligible. In 1967 the textile industry
became for the first time one of the major Swedish
exporting industries, 'and in 1968 it took fourth
place after the engineering, steel and paper
industries.
Its export performance and development
during the 1960's was equalled by very few Swedish
manufacturing industries.

The beginning of this development coincided
with the post-war recovery of the major European
textile countries the U.. in particular, but also
Belgium, Germany and others and the high rate of
development is all the more interesting, when it is
remembered that the wage level in the wouish textil
industry was between 40 and 60% higher than in
other West European textile producing countries, and
that many of the latter, as distinct from Sweden,
were protecting their industries with the help of
high tariffs and similar trade barriers.
