I have been following the correspondence between yourself and our Commercial Section in Algeria with interest, and am now writing to express agreement with Relton's views in his letter of 7th January.

The line of argument that Algeria enjoys a favourable Sterling trade balance with the UK is unlikely

Certain other to meet approval in that part of the world.

countries in North Africa have protested that they have unfavourable Sterling trade balances with us, and feel that we should do something about it. A general protest, however, would certainly do no harm at all, and the Board of Trade have no objection, although they see little chance of Algeria altering her tariff rates against Hong Kong. They have pointed out that although Algeria 18, de facto, a member of GATT, a protest along GATT lines is unlikely to meet a favourable response.

I am copying this letter to Relton in Algiers.
