record. I said that the only realistic attitude to take was to accept that there had to be some extension but to try to obtain such improvements as were to be had. These need not necessarily be in the text itself (although we should like to see Article 2 done away with), but could perhaps be recorded in understandings reached by the Cotton Textiles Committee. The Koreans agreed that they would like to see Article 2 terminated as they had to face significant import restrictions, particularly in the EEC.

Conclusion

7。 This encounter did not yield very much information from our point of view. But I think it was useful in that we managed to get some of our points across to the Koreans and, in particular, that Hong Kong was continuing to stand firm on non-cottons with the Americans.
