Footwear Group Tells Nixon(
It's Still Pre-Textile Quota
WASHINGTON.-The footwear industry will continue to support the American textile industry drive for quotas on imports it was made known at a meeting here between President Nixon and a footwear group.
This delegation is seeking means of controlling footwear imports. It was brought out at the meeting that Nixon personally regards the textile import problem as "very important" and also an “urgent" matter.
That President Nixon regards the textile import problem as very important was revealed by Tom Shannon, of Collier, Shannon & Rill, counsel for the National Footwear Manuafcturers Association.
He noted that both the footwear and textile import situations had arisen during the 30-minute session with the President, which had been arranged by Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R., Me.).
Shannon said the President thought the footwear import situation. was of "immediate concern" but also noted the textile import situa- tion is "very important."
Later, Sen. Hugh Scott (R., Pa.), who took part in the meeting, told reporters the President re- garded the footwear import prob- lem as being "fully as urgent, as Textiles," thus placing an "urgent" label also on the textile situation.
Following that White House meeting Shannon told Fairchild News Service® that while the footwear delegation went to the President pleading for action to secure voluntary footwear quotas, the group will continue to support the textile industry drive for its own relief.
That support includes support for the tough textile-leather Footwear Import Quota Bill (S. 2885) sponsored recently in the Senate.
.
The White House meeting included a Congressional delegation speaking on behalf of the footwear group, but at least - one member of that Congressional
delegation holds special status for the textile industry.
He is Rep. Phil Landrum (D., Ga.), a high ranking House Ways and Means Committee member who heads the house informal textile delegation.
