U.S. Denies X Japan Report On Imports

WASHINGTON. A top Commerce Department offi- cial Monday denied catego- rically reports from Tokyo that the department would propose limiting Japanese wool and synthetic textiles on a selective category-by- category basis.

"Absolutely not," said Stanley Nehmer, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Re-

sources.

"We have made no such proposal and do not en- visage making such a pro- posal to the Japanese," Nehmer said. "This is not a solution to the textile im- port problem."

The Tokyo report had it that the United States was weighing a call for an over- all limit on Japanese ship- - ments, with selective, cate- gory - by category limita- tions on certain major items.

It said the Commerce Department had told the Japanese Embassy in Wash- ington that the United

States would make a pro- posal to limit Japanese wool and man-made fibers, tex- tiles and apparel at a meet- ing next month in Wash-- ington of United States and Japanese textile experts.

The report quoted Japa- nese Foreign Ministry

sources.

However, officials of the American Bureau at the Jap- anese Foreign Ministry refused comment, except to note that "top officials are now in vaca- tion and there is no one quali- fied to comment."
