QUESTION: What do you consider a reasonable time?

It is our strong belief that if we don't succeed

in doing this in a reasonable length of time, that Congress

will take the play away from us and will proceed to legis-

You said something needs to be done at once on textiles.

SECRETARY STANS: I don't want to put a time

table on it. I noticed Henry Kerns in New York said yester-

day sixty days. I don't think this can be done-in sixty

days. It will take longer with the Summer months coming

up when it will take longer to get consideration in many

countries. We have to give this time and the amount of time

will depend upon the rate of progress we make.

What I am saying is if we don't make any progress

within ninety days we may be forced to take entirely different

views of the situation.

ninety days, we will continue.

QUESTION: Mr. Secretary, have you considered the

route of somewhat tightening our escape clause ̄ so that ̄you'

could get relief to the industry and on a pinpointed basis

if they could actually show injury?

SECRETARY STANG: Yes, we are considering the

possibility of the President taking the initiative in a

24

number of matters which would open up the United States'
