Correspondence between Mr. Jones and Mr. Shaun Stewart

on UK Textile Imports from Hong Kong.

Thank you for showing me a copy of Mr. Wilford's letter to

Mr. Carey of 2 December (HKK 6/31) on this subject.

As Hong Kong Department will be aware, I have been urging

for some time that this correspondence should be brought to a

close if only because it carried the danger that something which

Mr. Shaun Stewart had threatened in a purely hypothetical

situation might develop, through this correspondence, into a

concrete issue.

During the recent visit of Mr. Jones to London

I was able to have a brief private word with him on this question

and I spoke on the same lines. I have also mentioned the point

to Mr. Sellers, as Hong Kong Department will be aware.

I hope,

therefore, that from the Hong Kong side there will now be no

disposition to continuing this tedious exchange.
