MEMORANDUM FOR THE TRADE AND INDUSTRY ADVISORY BOARD

AND THE TEXTILES ADVISORY BOARD

Introduction

European Economic Community (E.E.C.) –

Common Commercial Policy

:

(This memorandum describes the background to

recent developments in the formulation of an E.E.C.

common commercial policy. It also explains the.

significance of these developments and their

relevance for Hong Kong as well as, in particular,

the efforts being made by the Community to formulate

a common policy on imports of cotton textiles within

the framework of the C.T.A. The paper concludes

by outlining the attitude being adopted by the

Department in contacts with the Community on these

questions and by commenting on the effects which

E.E.C..policies in these areas could have on the

terms of British entry to the Community. At their

next meeting, members will be invited to advis e

whether they are in agreement with the general line

being adopted. As some of the matters covered in

the Department will, at the meeting, attempt to

answer any questions which members may wish to put.)
