hi Couti

Bunny

Thank you for your letter of 25th June about the handling of Hong Kong's problems in connection with the Community's Common Commercial Policy.

2.

Neither I nor Ingram (to whom I have spoken) has any reason to change the terms of the draft reply to Derek Jones which you propose. Jackson's letter to you of 24th June also suggests that he would concur with the points you propose to make.

3. As for the question of a formal approach to the Commission about the implications of their Common Commercial Policy for Hong Kong, we would for our part see no need to make any move for the present. The discussion which I had here with Jordan last week was brief and very informal a short note of the meeting is attached but it suggested that on neither side is any need seen to deal with any particular problem in the near future. We would therefore be inclined to agree that we should await at least a more authoritative indication of Community intentions. If you should feel it worth including something to this effect in your letter to Derek Jones (in response to his para.11) we would naturally

concur.

4. I am sending a copy of this to Ingram.
