STATEMENT OF U.S. REPRESENTATIVE
CTAD SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON PRFFERE CFS
Agenda item 2
Fr. Chairman:
This
As we reported at the April 23 meeting of the
FCD working party on preferences, the United States
Administration is presently conducting a thorough
review of trade policy, including but not limited
to the question of generalized preferences.
Peview is still going forward, and therefore the
Cited States was not able to meet the target of
March 1 for the submission of illustrative lists and
assumptions.
It may be recalled that when the tart
date was adopted last fall, we made it clear the
United States could not guarantee to meet it because
a new Administration would take office in late
January and would undoubtedly need some time to examine
and make decisions or issues of such great importance.
S
I can only state today that the Administratic
policy review has not been completed and that I am
therefore not able now to give a definitive statemer t
of our position. I can assure you that our policy-
making officials are seized with the problem and that
as soon as decisions have been reached we will give
information concerning them.
