BOOK FUBLISHING The book division of the International Publishing Corporation, which publishes the Daily Mirror, has formed a new company in Hong Kong, Serasia Ltd., in conjunction with the Asia Magazine.

THE BRITISH PUMP MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION will study the possibility of setting up a manufacturing plant in Hong Kong. This was said by the leader of a recent Mission from the Association recently. He also said that he had been surprised at the technical facilities available in Hong Kong

THE PIANO TRADE The British Pianoforte Manufacturers Association sent a Mission to Hong Kong in November. It said that it was pleased with the results of its survey and would consider setting up an Asian Sales Service and Advisory Office in Hong Kong.

PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND the famous makers of knitwear have established a company in Hong Kong called Pringle of Scotland (Far East) Ltd.

HONG KONG THE TESTING GROUND An unusual tribute was paid to Hong Kong recently by a visiting British Executive. DUNHILL SUBSIDIARY Alfred Dunhill, which is a subsidiary of Carreras has announced that it is planning to expand its business in the Far East. They propose to establish a Hong Kong based company under the title of Alfred Dunhill (Far East) and also a Branch in Japan with a shop in Tokyo. Jardine Matheson & Co will be shareholders and Mr. M.A.R. Herries of Jardine Matheson & Co will be Chairman.

TURBINE GENERATOR An order worth £23 Million for a 120 M.W. Boiler and turbine generator has been placed by the China Light & Power Company with International Combustion and A.E.I. The plant, which is required for the Tsing Yi power station, is a duplicate of that ordered in July last.

The Kowloon Motor Bus Co Ltd plans to order 385 buses, additional to the 80 for which orders have already been placed.

JOINT VENTURE

Manuplastic (London) Co Ltd has entered into a joint venture with the Hong Kong firm of Frederich Pordes Co Ltd for the manufacture of moulds for the plastics industry. The output of the new company is for export.

BRITISH TEXTILE IMPORTS A recent issue of Tattersalls Weekly comments on the report of the Textile Council to the Board of Trade for the

twelve months ending last March. It notes that retained imports from unrestricted countries showed a rising trend, notably in grey cloth which were more than doubled to reach 30 million yards, finished cloth rising from 58 million yards to 71 million. The report says that this occasioned comment and concern as it could be taken as a reflection on the industry's ability to compete successfully with other Western countries.

The Imports Commission of the Council describes as a major disappointment the final rejection of the Government of its closely argued case in favour of a withdrawal of the 1% growth factor from the 1968 import ceiling.
