That in September, 1965, a salaries Commission was appointed by Idis Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong and the terms of reference included, inter alia

to review the relationship between pay for men and pay for women the position of women in Public Service and the difference

in conditions of service

between married and single women. published in 1965

A report was and paragraphs 98 (a) and (b),

99 and 103 of the Report are reproduced as follows:-

Paragraph 98

Where men and women are engaged in the

same occupation the work they do may be :

ca. identical, so that men and women are

interchangeable;

(b). similar, and of virtually the same value, but make and female staff are not interchangeable."

Paragraph 99.

"Where men and women are doing identical work, or similar work of virtually equal value, the Commission considers that both should be paid the same wage or salary which should be the wage or salary established in accordance with the principles of pay adjustment discussed in Chapter II, and that there should be no differentiation between married and single women.
