Conclusion
Our limited surveys show that shop employees are generally contented with their jobs. They seem to have few grievances to voice. They would welcome an improvement of their working conditions (who wouldn't?), but if they were asked to choose between improved conditions on the one hand, and greater job security on the other, they would choose the latter. They are aware that they are not sufficiently qualified academically to work in offices of the modern type, and yet they do not wish to work in factories which they regard as very uncomfortable places to work in. Shop owners are generally apprehensive about the whole thing. Other people are indifferent to the proposal. It seems that the efforts of some
well-meaning and good-natured people who have recently revived discussions on this subject of shop legislation have not succeeded in arousing a great deal of interest among the general public.
