WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION (AMENDMENT) FILL 1969

Passes Into Law, But Takes Effect From January 1, 1970
The Workmen's Compensation (Amondmont) Bill 1969 was passod into
law in the Legislative Council today. It comes into affect on January 1,
1970.
It substantially improves bonafits to workers and their dependents as
a result of injury or death while on the job, and covers domostic servants.
Its provisions were generally favourably received by the Council's
unofficial membors.
Tho Commissioner of Labour, Mr. R.M. Hothorington, supported an
amondmont by the Hon. P.C. Woo during the Bill's Committee stage on compensation
involving Hong Kong soamon sorving in foreign ships.
The amondmont sought to restore the position existing before a
recent ruling by a District Judge regarding the compotonco of courts to
docido in casos of compensation whore thoro was no liability under the Ordinanco,
but where tho partios concerned wore willing to submit to the jurisdiction
of these courts.
Mr. Hothorington said following tho dobato on tho socond roading
of the Bill two wooks ago, ho had hold discussions on tho mattor with
roprosontativos of tho Incorporated Law Socioty.
