Dear Department,
A Director of a major Swiss concern with world-wide interests, which include Hong Kong, has seen a brief report in a Swiss newspaper concerning a recent meeting of the U.N. Trusteeship Committee in New York which has led him to suspect that we might be considering giving up Hong Kong in the next few years. We have seen the article, which is in German, and there is nothing in it to lead to this conclusion.
However, the Director concerned, in a letter to Cedric Maby, H.M. Consul-General, Zürich, says: "The reference to Hong Kong where, as you know, we have very substantial interests, worries us considerably". He then goes on to ask in effect what H.M.G's policy is over the retention or otherwise of Hong Kong. We
should be glad to have a form of words from you in answer to this question.
The Chairman of this Company
is described by Maby as being "both extremely influential and a good friend of ours".
Yours ever,
Chancery (G. V. Britten)
