Commenting on the theme of a"new relationship with the region based primarily on an economic and business partnership," Trade Policy Dept. pointed out that what in fact we have is a wide range of relations ranging from the old-established trading partnerships to the "new" relationship deriving from the withdrawal of our military presence in South-East Asia. This distinction is worth bearing in mind in preparing the contribution.

Attached is also a copy of the planned synopsis of the contents of the supplement.
