as a Socialist, I am glad to see relegated to the past.

We are greatly impressed with the progress being made

by many Asian nations in raising the living standards of

We believe that a high level of trade has an important

part to play in this and we shall seek to maintain close and

friendly relations with all of them. Where financial aid is

still needed we shall be ready to contribute up to the limit

of what we can afford.

We hope that the tragic conflict in Vietnam may be,

although too slowly and painfully, drawing to a close.

Thereafter the security of that area, as of other areas in Asia, should depend chiefly on mutual regional co-operation,

underpinned by the resources of the free world.

Our support will always be behind all who are working for the peace, the progress and the ingreasing prosperity of

Asia, and no one should think that Britain has lost any of

its interest in this vast segment of the world where we have

been active so long.
