re-entering this field.

The Council library has been kept going but the position will be reviewed towards the end of this year.

BURMA (G)

With the continued limitations on foreign Information activities the B.B.C. remains the most potent instrument to influence the Burmese, by the World Service and the Burmese

Service. The B.B.C. English by Radio series in Burmese is also

broadcast by the Burma Broadcasting Service. Also in furtherance of our aim of preserving the existing use of English as the second language, two Colombo Plan lecturers are attached to the English Department at the Institute of Foreign languages in Rangoon. The Embassy supplies them with books, posters and films. C.O.I. films are in increasing demand for showing on Embassy premises to Army and senior Government officials.

No recommendations.

CAMBODIA (G)

Local law prohibits us from engaging in information

activities.

An exception is our participation in Cambodia's

International Film Festival.

LAOS (G)

There is no B.B.C. service in Cambodian.

The UK-based Information Officer's post has been abolished as from the end of January 1970 and the lease of the Information centre will not be renewed in December. There will also be savings . from dismissal of some locally-engaged staff. C.O.I. material

will be cut off unless any special items are of use to the GVSO English teachers and the film van operation will cease.

The post made out a case for an occasional article for the press on British aid for Laos and we should provide this service. At the request of the Embassy we also started in October, for a three- months trial period, supplying a weekly tape for the radio network, which is our biggest single aid project in Laos. (The programme cost of this tape service, paid by the B.B.C., is likely to amount to £400 p.a.).

Two category I visitors are scheduled and this programme

should be maintained.

Estimated savings will be over £10,000 out of £17,000.
