SECRET

Trade Unions have now ceased to issue strike pay to their members.

There is at present no evidence that the Communists are succeeding

in winning public support for their cause; nor is there any indica-

tion that they are likely to cease in their efforts to this end.

Detainees

All persons who were detained under Emergency Regulations as

a result of their participation in the 1967 disturbances have now

been released. The last detainee was released on 12 May, 1969.

Confrontation Prisoners

With the general improvement in the security situation it has

been possible to discontinue the vast majority of the Emergency

Regulations introduced during 1967 and the Governor has also found

it possible to review and reduce the sentences of a number of con→→

frontation prisoners sentenced to long terms of imprisonment.
