SELECT COMMITTEE ON RACE RELATIONS AND
IMMIGRATION
Mr. Foley has asked me to enquire from the various departments concerned how we project our policy on race relations and immigration, both overseas and to overseas visitors in this country. He has pointed out that the Committee will inevitably turn its attention to this question and we should be ready with our information. Three specific questions which immediately come to mind are:-
2.
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
How do we present Britain's racial relations and immigration policy overseas?
How do we brief sponsored visitors and
other official visitors either on their arrival or more particularly before they travel to sensitive areas, e.g. Smethwick, Wolverhampton and Bradford?
What briefing is given to our own
Diplomatic Service staff prior to overseas posting?
I should be grateful if you could let me have as soon as conveniently possible and in any case before the end of this month, a brief note on this subject, in 'so far as it affects your department. The notes will then be incorporated in a compre- hensive memorandum for submission to the Minister.
3. This minute is addressed to those departments who I believe to be most directly concerned, and is repeated to the political departments who may wish to express views. Attached for information is a general note on the composition, powers and functions of the Select Committee prepared by the Clerk.
