I managed to contact Mr.van Straubenzee this morning.

2. He leaves for Hong Kong on 21 May; thereafter he plans to visit Kuala Lumpur, arriving there 1 June, leaving for Singapore on Wednesday, 4 June. I gather that he has no plans for visiting Sabah but he may spend 24 hours in Indonesia though this seems doubtful.

In Kuala Lumpur and Singapore he would like to see a member of the High Commission so that he could be put in the picture on political matters. He will be writing to Sir Michael Walker and Sir Arthur de la Mare explaining exactly what he wants and where he will be staying etc. He made it clear to me t at he did not wish to bother the High Commissioners personally but would be content in seeing a member or members of their staff.

4. In regard to Malaysia and Singapore I said that we would be sending him briefing material

shortly and that we were informing the High Commissioners of his visit. On Hong Kong I explained that we were arranging for Mr. Sedgwick of the Hong Kong Government Office to let him have briefing material, particularly in the educational field. Mr. van Straubenzee said that he was most grateful for this but would, in addition, like to have a short note about the detainees and confrontation prisoners. What he really wants is a defensive note since he does not wish to get involved in any arguments on this subject. I said that I
