In his absence abroad, I am replying to your letter
174) of the 28th of January to Michael Stewart about the
185/6
telephone call you received at 4.00 am that morning from Mr. Somers of the "Star" newspaper, Hong Kong.
Let me say straight away that I do sympathise with you at being disturbed in this way in the small hours of the morning especially in view of your present family circumstances. The lack of consideration by reporters in their search for a story really is unbelievable.
In answer to your questions, I do not think that I can do better than send you the enclosed copy of a cutting from the edition of the "Star" which appeared on the 28th of January. This cutting seems to be related to the incident which you describe in your letter.
The "Star" is an independent English language news- paper which is published each afternoon. It is a tabloid newspaper which, a year ago, had the largest circulation (approximately 22,000) of all the English language news- papers. The newspaper has been in existence for some five years and we have no reason to suppose that it is not a reputable one even though it is very biased. Mr. Somers is its Chief Reporter.
Would you let me know if you require any further information?
