side as much as possible. He wondered, however, whether
Lord Shepherd would take it amiss if the Federation were to
issue a release about today's visit. This the Federation
had in mind to do: but they would drop the idea if the Minister thought it would be unhelpful. Lord Shepherd said that he would not object to this but hoped that what
was said was roughly in line with what Mrs. Grey had told the Press yesterday. He suggested that it might follow these lines: that the deputation had met the Minister of State this morning, that they expressed on behalf of their
Unions their concern over the arrest of Mr. Grey and other
British nationals in China and that they were satisfied that
HMG was doing everything possible in the circumstances.
