CONFIDENTIAL
Note of a meeting between Lord Shepherd and representatives of the Printing and Kindred Trades Federation at 11.00 am on
Wednesday. 15 January
153
As arranged, a deputation from the Printing and
Kindred Trades Federation called on Lord Shepherd this
morning. The team consisted of: Mr. Bonfield, Mr. Eastwood,
Mr. Bradley, Mr. Briginshaw and Miss Hart.
2.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Mr. Bonfield
said he was grateful to Lord Shepherd for sparing time
to see the deputation. Moving on to the purpose of
their call he said that he and his colleagues would like
to impress upon the Minister the apprehension and concern
of the members of the Journalist and Printing Unions in
this country over the plight of Mr. Grey. He wondered
whether Lord Shepherd could tell the deputation, in
confidence, what was being done to secure Mr. Grey's
release. He wondered also whether there was anything
the Printing and Kindred Trades Federation could do to
help.
3. Lord Shepherd said that he should, perhaps, mention
straightaway that he was thoroughly familiar with the Grey
case having lived with it for over 18 months: first
in the Commonwealth Office when he had special responsibi- lities for Hong Kong and now in the merged Foreign and
Commonwealth Office.
As the delegation would appreciate,
