A weekly visit by a Doctor. The Queen Mary Hospital is near to the Centre and if required, detainees are brought there for specialized treatment or observation. Also dental service is made available.

If a prisoner reports sick, medical service is made available apart from the weekly visit by a doctori.

The detainees do not work and apart from exercise they are in their cells at all times. Consequently, there is also no pay.

In small groups of up to about 9-10 detainees in

a small fenced-in area within the compound. I understand there are in fact two such areas.

Up to the time of my visit there were two exercise/ recreation periods per day, i.e. 20 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon. This has in the meantime been extended by another 15 minutes in the evening end depending on the prisoners' behaviour (shouting slogans, protesting etc.) additional periods will be allowed."

Any amount of incoming or outgoing mail is allowed but is subject to censure. Very few of the detainees make use of this facility, presumably because most of them receive regular visits.

2 visits per month are allowed (1 adult and 2 children or 2 adults per visit) and complete privacy as regards.

conversation is assured.

Visitors are allowed to bring clothing, cigarettes, fruit etc for detainees. Also reading matter which is censured.)

Books, newspapers, magazines, playing cards, Chinese Chess etc. are allowed. Reading matter is either supplied or otherwise (censured

Allowed during exercise periods. Can be bought or brought/sent in.

Legal Protection: All detainees are held under a warrant as explained

earlier and they have been informed of their legal rights. I am told that only three prisoners lodged an appeal to the Committee of Review. Two cases have been rejected and one is yet pending.

Treatment, discipline: Whilst there could be withdrawal of some

privileges (cigarettes, diet supplements etc.) I am told that there have been no incidents for some time and there was at no time a withdrawal of "diet" privileges.
