The two attached Parliamentary Questions by Mr. Leo Abse are

both for written reply tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 December.

They relate

to Emergency Regulations and detainees in Hong Kong and bring to

nine the total of Parliamentary Questions asked on this subject since

10 December. Since the questions are for written reply, no

Notes for Supplementaries are required. The previous Parliamentary

references are accordingly given at the head of this submission.

A copy of the Hansard extract relating to the two Questions by

Mr. Royle on 10 December is attached. The other five Questions are

being answered today (16 December) and copies of the relevant Hansard

extracts are not yet available.

Although a total of fifty four persons were originally detained

under Emergency Regulations, thirty eight have been released and there

are now sixteen persons in detention in Hong Kong under Regulation 31

of the Principal Emergency Regulations.
