MP RECOMMENDS ABOLITION OF
DETENTION WITHOUT TRIAL
Mr Daniel Jones, the visiting Labour parliamentarian, has recom- mended to "certain Government bodies" that Government should not detain anyone without a trial.
He said yesterday he made the recommendation on Monday night during talks with various Govern- ment officials.
Mr Jones said he spoke to the officials during informal discussions in the Mandarin Hotel where he and another Labour MP, Mr Brian Walden, are staying during their 10- day visit to Hongkong.
Yesterday Mr Jones made a tour of Wanchai while Mr Walden visited Shamshuipo.

At the Chai Kung Temple, Jones spoke to a woman who praying to the gods to heal an ail- ment.
In the streets of Wanchai he spoke to women and children, Chinese herbalists, metal workers and printers.
He also visited multi-storey buildings and bars in the district.
After a call at the Marine Depart- ment yesterday morning, Mr Jones said Hongkong harbour was "the cornerstone of the Colony's economy.'

However, at the Victoria Remand Centre, Mr Jones was "depressed to see so many young people there."
"People who advocate soft drugs In a permissive society should the young people there," he said.

He said both he and Mr Walden had been promised a visit to a centre which showed practical means of rehabilitation.
Today Mr Jones and Mr Walden will visit the squatter area of Kow- loon Tsat, one of the latest resettle- ment estates at Tsewanshan, and a number of factories in Kun Tong.
