In your minute of 8 July to Miss Emery, you suggested that the visit of the delegation from the U.K. Branch of the C.P.A. to the B.S.I.P., G.E.I.C. and the New Hebrides (30 September to 27 October - the dates have been revised since the Speaker's notice of 2 July was issued) seemed ill-timed in relation to the meeting of the South Pacific High Commission in Noumea. You wondered whether this should be pointed out to the U.K. Branch with a view to possible adjustment of the dates of the visit.
2. The U.K. Branch do, in fact, know of the Commission's meeting since this was one of the reasons why the projected Regional Study Conference in Fiji was postponed in 1968 and abandoned in 1969. The Branch suggested a visit to these islands in September or October (i.e. during the Parliamentary Recess) and the dates which have been agreed are those which are acceptable to the Island Branches. Arrangements for the visits to the Gilbert & Ellice Islands and the New Hebrides Condominium have been made through the Chief Secretary at the Western Pacific High Commission. I suggest that in the circumstances we need not try to re-schedule the itinerary.
3. I am attaching to this minute a copy of the itinerary and of a letter sent to all delegates by the Assistant Secretary of the United Kingdom Branch. A briefing meeting for the Delegation will be arranged, if possible, before the House rises for the Summer Recess. A decision on this point cannot be taken, however, until Miss Herbison's return to London later this week, (I understand that her brother died last Saturday after a long and painful illness. I am sending copies of this minute to Mr. Carter and Mr. Minnitt in order that their respective departments have time to consider what briefing may be necessary.
