We have said on a number of occasions in recent weeks from this
Dispatch Box that the Hong Kong Government have our full and complete
support in the measures they are taking to maintain public order and
their authority there. We are convinced that we must fulfil our full
responsibilities and obligations in Hong Kong.
We have made it clear on a number of occasions that we will accept
our full responsibilities in Hong Kong. We want the Colony to settle
down, to live in peace, to get on with its normal trading, and to see
an end to these incidents.

Mr. George Brown, in the Foreign Affairs Debate on 20th July
We cannot allow ourselves to be intimidated either by threats
from China or by violent outbreaks of local Communist sympathisers.
As my right hon. Friend made clear in his statement of 10th July, the
Hong Kong authorities have the full support of Her Majesty's Government
in taking all necessary measures to maintain peace and security there.
We intend to fulfil our responsibilities towards Hong Kong and to take
all the measures needed to restore the situation so that the people
who live there may settle down again to their normal pursuits, which is
what the vast majority of them want. On this basis, we hope that our
relations with China may return to their previous footing, to the mutual
benefit of China, ourselves and Hong Kong.
