Answering reporters questions at the Press Conference on his arrival at Kai Tak, Lord Shepherd said he hoped to see very many people during his stay here. He said those who had grievances to air should go to the proper channels. could never achieve a political end.
Violence he added
Referring to foreign reports of Hong Kong's recent troubles he said some of the reports had done a disservice to the Colony by their exaggeration. Turning to things to come Lord Shepherd said that the Colony had great future. He said Hong Kong had always depended on its large reservoirs of labour. In years to come, Hong Kong will experience some labour shortage as in other countries. Lord Shepherd added the Colony had ingenuity and drive.
But one thing the Colony's industrialists must do is to improve efficiency in labour management and to improve relation- ships between management and labour.
That is the only way for Hong Kong to participate in the expansion of world trade.
