2. An earlier visit than October would be very welcome. In whatever way it is presented there is bound to be some speculation and the shorter the notice the more likely it is to take the gloomy view that the visit indicates some sudden deterioration in the situation or heralds some change of policy.
3. For this reason and in particular to avoid the visit being too closely linked with the border events of last week I would like to be able to announce straightaway in general terms that you will shortly be paying us a visit in the course of a Far East familiarisation tour, the actual dates to be announced later. These could be given, say, a week later and a few days before the visit.
40 Such a time table would fit in with your arrival here on or about Friday, 25 August, and would be easier for us than a visit next week, although we could of course manage that if the later dates are awkward for you.
