DRAF NOTE
PLOVER COVE WATER SCHEME
Hong Kong has a population of 4 million people.
Water supply is a major concern. The Plover Cove Scheme
Frebling
is a large-scale project for doubling Hong Kong's water 45′′ reserves from about 15,000 m. gallons to a total of 3,000 m.
gallons.
2.
The scheme involves the enclosure of a sea-water
inlet on the eastern coast line of the Colony and its
conversion into a fresh water reservoir, A large variety of
ancillary works are involved including 8 miles of tunnels
ranging up to 22 ft. in diameter. With a length of 31⁄2 miles
and a breadth of a mile the Plover Cove reservoir will cover
nearly 3,000 acres. When the scheme is completed in 1968 it
will have cost more than £34 m., making it the largest project
ever undertaken by the Hong Kong Government and one which, as
the Governor says in his letter, "has excited considerable
international interest andthe admiration of all who have seen
it."
