The following are extracts from the minutes of
the Royal Visits Committee meeting of 27 March
attended by the P.U.S.:-
(d) The opening of the Hong Kong Plover Cover
water supply scheme in the autumn was
not an event of major importance, but
the Governor was known to be anxious for
a member of the Royal Family to be
present.
However, it was not clear that
a Royal visit to Hong Kong could be
recommended in present circumstances.
The Governor should be consulted further
during his forthcoming visit to London,
and it would thereafter be for
consideration whether a member of the
Royal Family should be invited to
attend. A decision would be needed by
the end of June.
The Committee
(3) Invited the Commonwealth Office
to discuss with the Governor of Hong
Kong the question of a Royal presence
at the opening of the Plover Cove
water supply scheme, and to advise The
Queen's Private Secretary further before
the end of June.
Could you please submit a draft letter from the
P.U.S. to the Palace before June?
