Statement by Mr. PANG Fu-wah, leader of the
Hong Kong "Heung Yee Kuk" mission to Britain
"We have come here to make personal contact with our fellow Chinese from Hong Kong. The events of 1967 must have been very worrying for them, particularly if they had not been receiving regular and straightforward news. I know that the events in Hong Kong have been very widely reported by the press, radio and television in Britain. But of course these media were
catering for their own British audiences. They could not possibly have satisfied all the anxieties of the Chinese people, who must want to know particularly how all this has been affecting their own families and their daily lives.
It seemed
to me
and my colleagues in the New Territories that the best thing was to come ourselves and give a first-hand account to
the people we know and understand.
"In any case, the people and the Government of Hong Kong are conscious of their continuing responsibility for the welfare of their people, even when they are living overseas in Britain. We hope therefore to examine any problems they have while living so far from home and to see whether improvements can be made in the arrangements for helping them with these problems.
"We shall be in Britain for about five weeks and that
time is much shorter than we would have liked. But before our
arrival a great deal of work had already been done to ensure that we shall meet very many of our relatives and friends. My colleagues and I are already deeply grateful for the reception we have had and by the news of the great interest
which our visit has aroused."
