afford to pay for the treatment, and you will have to satisfy him that you can do so. If you wish to apply for an entry certificate you should do so as far in advance as possible and give details of the treatment you wish to take.

RETURNING RESIDENTS

24. If I normally live in the United Kingdom, but have been away, may I return?

Yes: if you have made your home in the United Kingdom and you want to come back after a short absence, for exare on holiday or business, you will have no difficulty. Any Comon- wealth citizen who satisfies the Immigration Officer that he is "ordinarily resident” in the United Kingdom, or that he has been so resident there at any time within the previous two years, is entitled to admission. A person whose stay in the United King- dom is subject to a time limit is not regarded as being "ordinarily resident".

Long absences abroad on business or in the employment of a firm based in the United Kingdom will not necessarily disqualify a person from admission; the important point is that he must have maintained a permanent home in the United Kingdom at some time during the previous two years.

25. What about people who have been away more than two years? A Commonwealth citizen who has been away longer than two years and has not kept his home going in the United Kingdom may nevertheless be admitted if he has strong family ties there and had previously lived in the United Kingdom for some time. Someone who had lived most of his life in the United Kingdom and wanted to come back would in all probability be re-admitted even after a long absence.
