PREFACE
The purpose of this leaflet is to help Commonwealth citizens who are planning to travel to the United Kingdom and who will need to know before they leave home how the Common- wealt migrants Act 1962 affects them.
Commonwealth citizens coming to the United Kingdom will continue to be welcome, and those coming for a holiday or on business will be admitted freely, as will genuine students. But, because it is a small and heavily populated country, restric- tions have had to be placed on the number of Commonwealth citizens who wish to work or settle in the United Kingdom; there is a limit to the number of immigrants who can be provided with houses and other essential amenities and services, and integrated into the community.
The control over immigration is administered as fairly and humanely as possible, but the Immigration Officer at the port of arrival in the United Kingdom has to satisfy himself that you are entitled to enter. You are advised to study this leaflet carefully, and if you are in doubt on any point you should consult the office from which you obtained it. In the United Kingdom you may write to the Immigration and Nationality Department of the Home Office, 271-276 High Holborn, London, W.C.1. (or you may call at this address if your enquiry is urgent).
