3. Hours of Hork
At present, as in Britain, there are no legal restrictions on the
hours of work for men, but the hours they work are in many industrieB
affected by the legal restrictions imposed on the hours permitted for
women and young persons. Employers are obliged to provide six annual
holidays a year and a sickness allowance of up to 12 days a year,
Regulations made under the Factories and Industrial Undertakings
Ordinance in respect of women and young persons provide for maximum
daily hours, limited overtime, weekly rest days and rest periods,
Young pernons between the ages of 14 and 16 years may not work more
than 8 hours a day (48 hours a week) with a break of one hour after
5 hours continuous work, Night or underground work by women and young
persons is prohibited and employers met grant women and young persons
in industry a weekly day of rest. Under the same Regulations the
maximum weekly hours of work of women and young persons are restricted,
Over the years there has been much pressure (in and outside Parliament)
to reduce the total normal working hours for women and young persons
to 48 hours a week. With effect from 1 Desember 1967 a 4 year phased
programse of reduction of working hours for women and young persons to
a statutory maximum of 48 hours per wook on 1 December 1971_was_
