As I am sure you appreciate, the reason why the

maximum hours of overtime permitted for women and

young persons in Hong Kong are being increased over

4 years in step with the reductions in working hours

is primarily to avoid reductions in their earnings and

maximum flexiblity to

competitive industries a breathing space to adjust

to the new conditions.

Taking all considerations into account, I think

it would be fair to say that conditions in Hong Kong

compare favourably with those in other Asian countries,

especially as far as hours of overtime actually

worked are concerned.
