Parliamentary Question

Hours of Work,

Theoretically an adult man can work 359 days a year but in practice this does not happen. Time off in any one month up to four days is permitted without loss of normal earnings. Additionally, it is customary to grant unpaid leave on request. On 13 May, 1967, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries issued a circular to all its members recommending that they should adopt a standard six-days working week for all employees, including adult male workers. See my telegram No. 554 of 8 May, 1967, on women and young persons in the garment industry.

See my savingram No. 1138 of 19 June regarding current proposals on a 48-hours week for women and young persons.

Copies of Greenhalgh's letters of 23 and 30 May follow in next bag. One day of rest in every seven is already required by law.
