refused to recognise four out of five representatives on the grounds that they had

no negotiating status in view of their earlier dismissal, no discussions took

place.

5. On 22nd November, the C.I.W.G.U. took over the case of the strikers,

presented a list of five demands to the management, and suggested that the

conciliation services of the Labour Department should be used. The management

agreed to meet the C.I.W.G.U. at the Labour Department and the first meeting under

the chairmanship of a conciliation officer took place on 25th November. The five

demands presented by the C.I.W.G.U. for negotiation were as follows:

(a) reinstatement of dismissed workers and payment of wages for

the period of the strike.

(b) increase of the night shift bonus from $1.30 to $2.00.

(c) one day off a week for all workers.

(d) an 8-hours day for all workers.

(e) payment of wages to all workers for the period of the strike.

6. Several other incidents took place between 11th and 25th November. On

12th November, Mr. Chung, the worker dismissed on 4th November, assaulted a

foreman by striking him on the head with a bottle. He was arrested, charged with

assault, and fined $150. On the night of 24/25th November, there was another sit-

down strike and pickets entered and remained inside the factory until 26th

November. The weaving department was closed until the 29th November when the

management arranged for workers to be transported by lorry to the factory. A group

of strikers blocked the factory entrance and, when they refused to move, the

police arrested nine men and nine women. They were charged with obstruction,

pleaded guilty, and each was fined $15. Since then, pickets have been continuously

posted outside the factory. They have been removed but not arrested by the police

to allow workers to enter the factory.

7. Eight conciliation meetings were held at the Labour Department between

25th November and 10th December. On the latter date conditions for the resumption

of work were accepted by the representatives of management and union ad

referendum. They included an early return to work by all strikers except the ten

/dismissed
