(5) In view of the apparent importance attached by the Chinese

to "the release of all prisoners" (one of the original

"five demands" made by Peking) he would be prepared to

release certain of them on condition that they would be

accepted in China under deportation orders. He would in

fact greatly welcome an assured ability to take this step;

but he could not in present circumstances agree to the

unconditional release in the Colony of any of the persons
