Peking warns UK
Demands must be carried out unconditionally
Peking, October 10 The People's Daily today carries a commentary entitled 'Strongly Protest 'Against the Fascist Atrocities by British Imperialism'. Full text follows:
At the solemn moment when the patriotic Chinese in Hongkong and the entire Chinese people were celebrating the brilliant festival of the 18th anniver- sary of the founding of the People's Re- public of China, British imperialism in- curred another blood debt to the people of our country.
On October 1, the British authoritics in Hong kong aggressively sent gun boats, police boats, helicopters and large numbers of 'riot police', to brutally intervene in the National Day celebra- tions at Hongkong docks attended by Chinese crew members and the masses. The British authori- ties carried out new fascist atrocities, killed one Chinese resident and arrested nearly one hundred people. The following day, British armed forces stationed in Hongkong arrogantly tore up and stole Chinese national flags. These actions are new and serious political provocations by British imperialism against the People's Republic of China and the 700 million Chinese people. Refusal won't be tolerated
The Chinese Government has lodged the strong- est protest with the British imperialists against these fascist atrocities and demanded that the Bri- tish Hongkong authorities punish the culprits, re-
logies for the destruction of the Chinese national flags; and guarantee that no such incidents occur

volutionary criticism and repudiation with the con- crete tasks of struggle-criticism-transformation in each unit. This is to completely clear away all revisionist trash advocated by the handful of top Party persons in authority taking the capitalist road in the political, economic, ideological and cultural fields, and to wipe out their reactionary influence so as to transform thoroughly every- thing which is not suited to the socialist system and which facilitates a restoration of capitalism. This will further develop the ability of the masses to recognize what revisionism is and to resist it, hence a solid mass basis for opposing revisionism and preventing its rise.
In order to more effectively criticise and re- pudiate revisionism and to remould our own world outlook, we must resolutely combat self-interest. Comrade Lin Piao says: "In making revolution, we must also revolutionize ourselves. Without revolutionizing ourselves, we cannot succeed in making this revolution.' In the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, the struggle between prole- tarian and bourgeois ideology, the struggle be- tween the proletarian and bourgeois world outlook have never been so sharp and acute as they are now and they have never so penetratingly touched every one's soul as they are doing today. All pro. letarian revolutionaries and revolutionary masses must do still better in studying and applying Chairman Mao's works in a living way, persist in eradicating self-interest and fostering devotion to the public interest and firmly establish the spirit of absolute selflessness and of utter devotion to others without any thought of self. As Chairman Mao has taught us: "With this spirit everyone can be very useful to the people. A man's ability may be great or small, but if he has this spirit, he is already noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people. Only in this way can conditions conducive to the growth of revision- ism be blocked and the roots of revisionism era- dicated. This is an important question which concerns the fate of our country and the future of
in the future. The British Government must un-
conditionally carry out these demands. Once debts them will not be tolerated. are incurred, they must be repaid; refusal to pay
For a century the Chinese people have been bullied and oppressed by imperialism. But now times are different, the Chinese people have stood up! Imperialism declines with each passing day and is heading for its doom, while the great Chi- tung's thought, have become outstandingly power- nese people, liberated and armed with Mao Tse- ful. Whoever tries to provoke the great Chinese people will surely come to no good end.
Hongkong is the territory of China, and the Hongkong compatriots have the sacred and in- violable right to celebrate their great mother- land's National Day. British imperialism will never succeed in its attempts to deprive, by the use of fascist violence, our Hongkong compatriots of this right.
Fascist and hypocritical
The British imperialists are utterly ruthless and at the same time extremely hypocritical. On the one hand they engage in every brutal form of fascist activity and on the other they pretend to be gentlemen and boast about British 'democracy', 'liberty' and 'civilization' and make much-to-do about 'improving' and 'relaxina* relatione with
ment fear most the accusation of being fascist. They jump the minute they are exposed, as if an
the world, a question of great importance for hun- dreds and thousands of years.
After the October Revolution, Lenin said: 'We are living in an historic period of struggle against the world bourgeoisie, which is far stronger than we are. At this stage of the struggle, we have to safeguard the development of the revolution and combat the bourgeoisie in the military sense and still more by means of our ideology through edu- cation, so that the habits, usages and convictions acquired by the working class in the course of many decades of struggle for political liberty-the sum total of these habits, usages and ideas-should serve as an instrument for the education of all working people.'
Comrade Lin Piao pointed out: 'We must res- pond to the great call of Chairman Mao and, with the instruction "combat self-interest and cri- ticize and repudiate revisionism" as the guiding principle, strengthen the ideological education of the army and civilian cadres and of the Red Guards.
Various kinds of study classes should be organized both at the central and local levels and can also be run by the revolutionary mass organizations, so that the whole country will be turned into a great school of Mao Tse-tung's thought. These studies will help our veteran and new cadres and young revolutionary fighters to learn and apply Mao Tse-tung's thought in a liv- ing way, liquidate all sorts of non-proletarian ideas in their minds, raise their ideological and poli- tical level and perform new meritorious deeds for the people.' Education
The education of cadres is a very important aspect of the ideological work among the revolu- tionary ranks.
The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution is, in one way, a movement for educating the cadres. Most revolutionary cadres have been well tem- pered in this revolution. We should unite all cadres who can be united. Cadres who have committed mistakes of varying degrees of serious- ness must be educated without exception. Cadres who have committed mistakes should regard the masses' strict criticism and repudiation as the best assistance they could receive. They should crea- tively study and apply Chairman Mao's works in

open wound had been touched. This is how the British Foreign Secretary Mr Brown has been acting.
However, no matter how much the British im- perialists jump. facts are more eloquent than words. The actions of the British imperialists are none other than fascist atrocities. You British im- perialists have not only carried out fascist atro- cities against the great festival of the Chinese peo- ple, but during the last five months, you have killed our compatriots in Hongkong and destroyed their corpses in order to conceal every trace of murder; you have arrested and kidnapped large numbers of our compatriots, tortured them, and illegally tried them; you have issued one fascist decree after another and attacked, destroyed, burn- ed and robbed patriotic trade unions at random; you have used fully-armed troops, police, special agents and military vessels, poisonous tear-bombs, machineguns, armoured-cars and even helicopters in the bloody suppression of our compatriots. You have committed monstrous crimes against our compatriots in Hongkong. You are out-and-out fascists. You are disciples i Hitler.
Days numbered
The fascist atrocities in Hongkong only serve to show up the weakness of British imperialism, show that it can no longer uphold its reactionary and corrupt rule without resorting to naked fascist measures and tearing off the mask of false de- mocracy. British imperialism is extremely afraid of the great thought of Mao Tse-tung and of the valiant struggle put on by our compatriots in Hongkong. The struggle of the Hongkong patrio- tic Chinese during the past five months in resis- tance of British imperialist violence has dealt kong and frightened them so that they are at their a heavy blow at the British imperialists in Hong-
wits-end. They are putting up a last-ditch strug- gle.

relationship to the practice of class struggle and their own experience and lessons, sincerely correct their mistakes, heighten their understanding of the revolution under the dictatorship of the prole- tariat, and devote their energies to the revolution- ary mass criticism and repudiation and to the 'struggle, criticism, transformation' in their own units.
It is necessary to intensify the ideological edu- cation of the revolutionary youth and the Red Guards, to infuse them with Mao Tse-tung's thought, to help them grow healthy and sound in struggle.
The revolutionary youth and the Red Guards have played the role of vanguards in the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. Yet the trans- formation of world outlook is a long, arduous process. They must take a correct attitude to- wards themselves and pay special attention to the creative study and application of Chairman Mao's works. In the storm and stress of the Great Prole- tarian Cultural Revolution and in the course of learning from the workers, peasants and soldiers, they should strive to steel themselves as reliable successors to the revolutionary cause of the prolė- tariat,
In discussing tradition, Engels said: Tradition is a great retarding force, is the vis inertiae of his- tory, but, being merely passive, is sure to be broken down .
Feudal society existed for several thousand years and capitalist society for several hundred years. These social systems are dead or dying. The ideology that serves such social systems is rotten to the core. Scientific communism has only existed a little more than a hundred years, begin- ning from the 'Communist Manifesto', but it is a new-born, invincible force. Chairman Mao has stated: "The communist ideological and social sys- tem alone is full of youth and vitality, sweeping the world with the momentum of an avalanche and the force of a thunderbolt. With the wise leadership of the great leader Chairman Mao and his all-illuminating, invincible thought, we are ful- ly confident that we can apply the thorough-going proletarian world outlook of Marxism-Leninism, Mao Tse-tung's thought to defeat any exploiting class ideology and wrest great world-wide victory for communism!-Hsinhua
